A motto to learn from

The motto chosen by Pope Francis: Miserando atque eligendo. This is again to do with the  great mercy of a loving God and how we  might choose to respond. The Holy Father’s motto Because he saw him through the eyes of mercy and chose him is taken from a homily by Saint Bede the Venerable regarding the calling of St Matthew by Jesus. Pope Francis explained that he experienced the mercy of God in a particular way at the age of 17. “Following confession, his heart was touched by the descent of the mercy of God, who with tender love called him to the religious life,” a Vatican communiqué stated.

“Vidit ergo Iesus publicanum, et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi, ‘Sequere me’.

Jesus, therefore, saw the publican, and because he saw by having mercy and by choosing, He said to him, ‘Follow me’”.
